The Caribbean Community has formally welcomed Martinique as its newest Associate Member, marking a significant development in regional cooperation that further integrates the French Caribbean territory into the wider Caribbean framework.

Although geographically and culturally rooted in the Caribbean, Martinique has long followed a distinct political trajectory as an overseas department of France. Its new status within CARICOM represents a formal strengthening of ties that have steadily developed over time.

The accession became effective on June 16, 2026, enabling Martinique to take part in this week’s Fifty First Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, which runs from July 5 to 8 in Saint Lucia. The addition brings the total number of Associate Members in the organisation to seven.

The process leading to membership began in February 2025, when an agreement granting Associate Membership was signed. In June 2026, CARICOM received the Instrument of Accession from the Government of the French Republic. This step allowed the Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of CARICOM to enter into force, completing the legal requirements for Martinique’s inclusion.

CARICOM officials confirmed that Martinique now participates in the organisation’s work under the framework designed for non sovereign territories, which allows engagement in selected areas while respecting constitutional arrangements with metropolitan states.

Associate Membership provides opportunities for cooperation in areas such as economic integration, foreign policy coordination, human development and security collaboration. While Associate Members do not hold the same decision making powers as full Member States, their participation is intended to widen regional dialogue and deepen cooperation.

The organisation, established in 1973 through the Treaty of Chaguaramas, currently comprises 15 Member States and seven Associate Members. It represents approximately 16 million people, with around 60 per cent of the population under the age of 30.

CARICOM has also expanded its mandate over time, including the creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy in 2001, aimed at strengthening economic integration among member countries.

Officials say Martinique’s entry reflects growing recognition that shared challenges across tourism, climate resilience, trade and transport require coordinated regional responses.

As leaders gather in Saint Lucia for the summit, Martinique’s participation as an Associate Member signals a new phase in its engagement with Caribbean institutions and reinforces broader efforts to deepen regional cooperation across linguistic and political boundaries.
