Masai Ujiri Exits Raptors, Stays in Toronto

Masai Ujiri is no longer the architect of the Toronto Raptors—but his legacy, spirit, and voice remain louder than ever.

In a six-minute video released by Giants of Africa, Ujiri addressed his departure for the first time not with bitterness or blame, but with gratitude, pride, and deep affection. No press conference, no media blitz, just a man speaking directly to the city that embraced him, and the country he now calls home.

“Toronto, Canada, I love you,” he began, a simple truth from someone who gave the Raptors everything over 12 unforgettable years.

Ujiri’s time as president will be remembered not only for the 2019 championship banner, but for reshaping the entire culture of the franchise. He brought belief, swagger, and purpose to a team often defined by its limits. Under his watch, Toronto stopped asking if it belonged among the NBA’s elite, and proved that it did.

The abrupt nature of his exit, just hours after the 2024 NBA Draft, with little explanation from Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, felt colder than it should have. For days, Ujiri said almost nothing publicly. But this video, quietly powerful and rich with personal reflection, was his real send off.

He talked about more than basketball. He talked about home.

His children were born in Toronto. His wife, Ramatu, built roots here. The Raptors weren’t just a job, they were family. And like any good family story, his included triumph, heartbreak, and resilience. “Through the storms, we held on,” he said, referencing years of global unrest, social movements, and pandemic uncertainty.

Ujiri also reaffirmed his lifelong mission through Giants of Africa, the youth foundation he co-founded long before NBA titles were in reach. “My goal has always been to win,” he said, “but also to make change that transforms the landscape so young leaders can rise.” That vision, he made clear, is far from over.

He gave a heartfelt nod to the women who powered the Raptors organization behind the scenes, and offered his full support to the city’s new WNBA franchise, the Toronto Tempo. “I’ll be right here,” he promised.

While fans may still be wondering what’s next for Ujiri, whether another front office awaits, or if he shifts fully to global advocacy, one thing is certain: his departure isn’t an ending, but a transition. And like everything else he touched in Toronto, it was done with purpose, grace, and heart.

The Raptors are entering uncharted territory without Ujiri at the helm. But the foundation he built remains strong. As he said in his closing message, “You will win again in Toronto.”

We believe him.
