A recent survey conducted by MaRS Discovery District, District 3, and partners in Ontario and Quebec has revealed concerning mental health issues among health sciences startup founders. The Mind Balance Project, which gathered insights from over 100 C-suite leaders, found that the pressures of running startups in the health sciences sector have led to significant burnout and anxiety. One of the most striking findings was that 65% of women founders reported experiencing burnout, compared to 42% of their male counterparts. Pre-seed founders, in particular, faced high levels of anxiety due to long development cycles, regulatory hurdles, and challenges with securing funding. Despite these overwhelming pressures, only 12% of the respondents sought professional mental health support.
The survey also highlighted financial concerns as the top stressor for these entrepreneurs, with 84% identifying it as their primary source of anxiety. Fear of failure was another major factor, affecting 58% of respondents, while 42% cited the current economic climate as an additional burden. Entrepreneurs, especially those in the fields of biotech, medical devices, and digital health, are under tremendous pressure to scale their businesses, all while navigating financial uncertainty and meeting investor expectations.
BIPOC founders, in particular, were found to be experiencing the highest levels of mental health struggles. This highlights the need for more culturally responsive resources that cater to the unique challenges faced by these individuals. The survey strongly advocates for accessible, low-cost mental health support, mentorship networks, and broader access to trained therapists and coaches to address these challenges.
In response, MaRS and its partners are actively working on developing targeted mental health support programs to provide the necessary assistance to entrepreneurs. As North America’s largest urban innovation hub, MaRS aims to help Canadian tech companies succeed by supporting initiatives that prioritize the well-being of founders in emerging industries.
