The newly opened Ming Wei Medical Centre in Scarborough is set to play a pivotal role in addressing healthcare gaps and workforce shortages, thanks to an $880,000 investment from the Ontario government through the Skills Development Fund. The announcement was made during a celebratory event attended by Ministers, MPPs, local leaders, and members of the media, highlighting the center’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and training for the community.

The event welcomed dignitaries including Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, Raymond Cho, MPP Patrice Barnes, Minister Vijay Thanigasalam, MPP Aris Babikian, and MPP David Smith. Their collective presence underscored the significance of the investment in Scarborough’s healthcare infrastructure.

Since opening its doors on June 1st, the Ming Wei Medical Centre has provided essential services such as a walk-in clinic, blood work in partnership with Dynacare, ECG, X-ray, ultrasound, bone density testing, and traditional Chinese medicine therapies. The center now aims to expand its reach by training up to 100 healthcare professionals, focusing on high-demand areas such as healthcare management and advanced diagnostic imaging.

In his address, Minister Cho praised the investment as a crucial step toward solving the healthcare worker shortage. “We are enhancing training capacity in high-demand fields to train more medical professionals and boost our healthcare sector to better serve our community,” he said. He also highlighted the broader government strategy to counter the province’s skilled labor shortage, noting that 219,000 jobs remain unfilled across Ontario.

Cho, who recently marked 33 years in public office, emphasized the importance of Scarborough’s diverse and growing population. “We are committed to building a strong healthcare workforce for Scarborough to meet the needs of our diverse, fast-growing community here.”

President of the Ming Wei Medical Centre, David Lam, expressed gratitude for the government’s support. “This investment will enable us to train up to 100 professionals here in Scarborough, addressing critical gaps in our healthcare workforce. Our project will create skilled opportunities and enhance the quality of care and services, directly benefiting our community,” he said.

“People appreciate that we offer a one-stop-shop for medical needs. With this grant, we can only get better,” Dr. Khan told The Caribbean Camera. His leadership reflects the center’s commitment to serving Scarborough’s richly diverse population.

MPP Patrice Barnes emphasized the importance of training and upskilling healthcare workers to meet increasing demands. “Through skills development, we are not only upskilling but also diversifying our workforce,” she stated. The initiative targets underrepresented groups, including minority women, people with disabilities, and refugees, ensuring inclusivity in healthcare professions.
