The  mothers are members of the Zero Gun Violence Movement which has held several demonstrations and led a delegation to Ottawa calling on the federal government  for tougher gun laws.

More than a hundred people took part in the march in Toronto on August 19 last which began at City Hall and ended at Queen’s Park with a balloon release in honour of their lost loved ones.

At the end of the march several of the women spoke out against gun violence.

Among the speakers was Trinidad-born Joan Howard whose son, Kempton, a community youth worker, was shot and killed in Toronto in 2003. She’s has been pushing for action against gun violence ever since.

She   told the Caribbean Camera that she was part of a delegation to Ottawa this year which discussed the problem with Members of Parliament.

Howard said that a delegation from the Zero Gun Violence Movement will be back to Ottawa  in October to meet federal MPs for further discussions.

Louis March, founder of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, noted that shootings and gun homicides in Toronto are on the rise.

“We intend to send a loud and clear message to the three levels of government calling of them  to take action against gun violence ,” March said.
