Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a historic state visit to Guyana this week marking the first visit by an Indian leader to the oil-rich Caribbean nation since Indira Gandhi in 1968. The trip is expected to strengthen ties between the two countries through energy and defense agreements, amid Guyana’s ongoing economic boom fueled by its burgeoning oil sector.

Modi will meet with Guyana’s President, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and address a special session of the country’s parliament. Guyana’s Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, hailed the visit as a milestone in relations between two of the world’s fastest-growing economies. “With PM Modi’s visit, we anticipate enhanced cooperation in energy, agriculture, technology, and security, benefiting both nations,” Persaud said.
Guyana has seen extraordinary economic growth, with GDP expanding by over 40% in recent years, according to the World Bank, largely due to its oil reserves. This rapid development has made the country a magnet for global investment, with India viewing it as a key partner due to their shared historical and cultural ties.

Modi will also co-chair a Caricom-India Summit alongside Grenada’s Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell. The summit will focus on strengthening India-Caricom cooperation in areas such as energy, agriculture, health, and technology. India is particularly interested in the region’s energy potential, with Guyana and neighboring Suriname emerging as key players in oil and gas production. “India faces an energy deficit, and the southern Caribbean energy complex, including Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, is geopolitically significant,” noted Dr. Scott MacDonald, an economist and Caribbean Policy Consortium fellow.
Modi’s visit also highlights Guyana’s strong ties to India, with nearly 40% of its population of East Indian descent. Modi will honor these ties by engaging with the Indian diaspora, participating in a floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, and visiting the Indian Arrival Monument, which commemorates the arrival of indentured laborers from India.
This visit reflects a deepening partnership between India and Guyana, emphasizing shared cultural heritage and mutual economic and geopolitical interests.
