Marit Stiles, leader of the Ontario NDP, announced a bold plan to eliminate tolls on Highway 407 if her party forms the next provincial government. Stiles unveiled the proposal alongside Team Brampton candidates Martin Singh (Brampton East) and Ruby Zaman (Brampton North), emphasizing its potential to save GTA commuters time and money.
“Drivers in Brampton and across the GTA pay the highest tolls in North America, thanks to bad deals made by past Conservative governments and defended by Ford’s Conservatives,” said Stiles. “As Premier, I’ll make the 407 toll-free, put money back in your pockets, and get you home faster.”
The NDP leader criticized Premier Doug Ford for failing to enforce penalties on 407 operators. In 2021, the operators faced $1 billion in fines for breaching traffic agreements, but Ford’s government waived the penalties. Instead, tolls have continued to rise, with increases of up to 14 cents per kilometre this year.
Stiles pledged to immediately remove truck tolls on the 407’s provincially owned sections and negotiate with 407ETR to make the highway toll-free for all vehicles within her first 100 days in office. The move aims to ease congestion on the 401 and save commuters thousands annually.
