Tosh Fest 2025 celebrates reggae legend’s legacy

Reggae icon Peter Tosh to be honoured in October festival

Peter Tosh

The legacy of reggae pioneer Peter Tosh will be commemorated once again this October, as the annual Tosh Fest returns to his home parish. Set for Sunday, October 19, the festival will unfold at the Peter Tosh Memorial Garden in Bluefields on what would have been his 81st birthday.

Organised by the Peter Tosh Foundation, the event is free to the public and invites families, fans, and music lovers to celebrate the life and message of a man who helped define reggae as both sound and statement. The day will feature live performances, cultural vendors, family activities, and a tribute ceremony, all designed to honour Tosh’s lifelong advocacy for equal rights and justice.

Born Winston Hubert McIntosh in 1944 in nearby Grange Hill, Tosh rose from modest beginnings to become one of reggae’s most unflinching voices. He taught himself guitar after watching a man play for food, an early act of determination that would come to characterise his entire life.

In the early 1960s, he co-founded The Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Livingston. While the group gained fame for their musical innovations and social commentary, Tosh eventually pursued a solo path that brought his own voice into sharper focus. His albums Legalize It and Equal Rights became rallying cries for the downtrodden, tackling marijuana laws, racial oppression, and institutional corruption.

Tosh’s career was marked by global collaborations, including a popular duet with Mick Jagger in 1978. His impact spread far beyond Jamaica, though his life ended in tragedy when he was murdered during a home invasion in Kingston in 1987 at the age of 42.

Tosh Fest continues as both celebration and mission, aiming to uplift the local community while preserving the radical message he left behind. As the sun sets over Westmoreland this October, the music will once again carry his call for justice.
