OBHS kicks off Black History Month

The Ontario Black History Society will kick off Black History Month 2014 with its annual Kick-Off Brunch at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex in Toronto.
Hosted by the multi-talented entertainer Sean Mauricette (a.k.a. Subkiminal) and Tammie Sutherland of City News, the start of Black History Month will be celebrated with music, dance, and recognition of the contributions of inspirational African-Canadians.
Featuring Keynote Speaker Dr. Beverley Salmon, the afternoon showcases a range of artists with performances by Archie Alleyne and the Evolution of Jazz (EOJ) Ensemble (featuring Aijia Waithe and Kamil Andre), singer-songwriter Rob Green, and Kevin A. Ormsby with KasheDance, presented by dance Immersion.
The OBHS will honour several individuals and organizations for their standout achievements. This year’s distinguished awardees include Rev. Addie Aylestock Award – Christ Church, British Methodist Episcopal; Mathieu Da Costa Award – Dr. Bryan Walls; Dr. Daniel G. Hill Award – Dr. Beverley Salmon; Olivier le Jeune Award – Brainerd Blydon-Taylor; and the Harriet Tubman Award – Black Business Professional Association, BBPA.
This year’s event is made possible by Title sponsor TD Bank, and by the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, ETFO. Door prize/raffle sponsors include Porter Airlines, VIA Rail, MAC Cosmetics, 3M, Harlem Restaurant and Miranda Designs.
The brunch takes place on Sunday, January 26, 2014 from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, with a marketplace at Noon, at Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex, The Governor’s Room, 25 British Columbia Road, Exhibition Place, Toronto.
