Saying “thank you” may seem simple, but the Organization of Calypso Performing Artistes (OCPA) cannot express enough gratitude for the incredible work that made KAISO 365 a resounding success last Saturday at the Hungarian House.
The event showcased the best of Canadian Calypso and crowned this year’s Calypso Monarch—Guyana-born The Crooner (Bill Newman)—whose song “The Fifty-First State” earned him a unanimous win and one of the most popular victories in OCPA’s history.
Behind the scenes, Jocelyn Phillips worked tirelessly alongside the OCPA board to deliver a show that met the high standards set by previous administrations. Her leadership and team effort were central to the event’s success.
Although the competition featured only six contestants, a creative twist came in the form of a steelpan soloist shootout—an innovation from Ontario Steelpan Association president Terrence Wilson. It brought great energy to the program and marked a meaningful collaboration between OCPA and OSA. Robbie Charles and Toby stood out as crowd favourites.
Veteran MC Rhoma Spencer returned for her third year, keeping the crowd engaged with her comedic flair. Her expert handling of an unexpected technical failure was nothing short of brilliant, proving once again why she remains a favourite.
OCPA extends deep appreciation to judges Valerie Seals, Noreen Callender, and their panel, who continue to dedicate themselves to preserving Calypso in Canada. Their commitment is invaluable.
Final placements were as follows: The Crooner, King Cosmos, Guney, Pan Man Pat, Blocker, and Leon Spice. Macomere Fifi and Susan G also performed, bringing balance to an otherwise all-male cast.
Thanks also go to Ossie Gurley and The Truth, our backing vocalists, and technician DeVon—whose talent brought the music alive.
OCPA is grateful to FMC President Jennifer Hirlehey, the FMC board and staff, OSA, our vendors, sponsors, honorees, Princess Trinidad, the “Bacchanal Posse,” and all attendees for their continued support.
As we look ahead, OCPA invites Calypso lovers with skills in administration, media, and fundraising to join us in sustaining Calypso in Canada.
