Renowned TV anchor Omar Sachedina has launched the groundbreaking Sachedina ∙ CTV News ∙ Fellowship in collaboration with RTDNF Canada and Massey College at the University of Toronto.
The fellowship offers a coveted opportunity for recent graduates or students within a year of graduation from Canadian universities or colleges to receive a $10,000 stipend. This stipend is aimed at supporting the production of a substantial and original piece of journalism, which will be considered for publication on a CTV News platform. The selected project should be completed within six months of being admitted into the fellowship program and should explore a subject or theme significant to Canada and Canadians.
Throughout the reporting journey, the fellow will benefit from mentoring and training provided by the leading team of editors and reporters at the CTV National Newsroom in Toronto.
“Journalism is the bedrock of our democracy. We take immense pride in inaugurating the new Sachedina ∙ CTV News ∙ Fellowship to bolster and expand opportunities for the next generation of Canadian journalists,” remarked Sachedina. “Through mentorship and training, the fellows will refine their reporting skills to deliver a piece that challenges and enriches our comprehension of the nation.”
Bill Amos, President of RTDNF Canada, lauded the fellowship’s significance, stating, “This fellowship offers students a unique and pivotal opportunity to embark on their careers with a notable journalistic endeavor. There’s nothing quite like it in Canada, serving as a launching pad supported by Omar Sachedina and the exceptional CTV News team, positioning the recipients among the elite in Canadian journalism.”
Lis Travers, President of RTDNA Canada, underscored the crucial timing of the fellowship, saying, “At a pivotal moment, this fellowship equips aspiring journalists with the means and opportunity to pose probing questions and uncover stories that resonate with us all.”
In its inaugural year, two fellows will be selected, with one fellow chosen annually thereafter. The 2024 fellows will be unveiled at the RTDNA Canada National Conference and Awards Gala ceremony, slated to be held in Toronto in Fall 2024.
The application deadline for the Sachedina ∙ CTV News ∙ Fellowship is June 30, 2024. For further details, please contact Rob Duffy at 416.384.5717 or rob.duffy@bellmedia.ca.
