Ontario NDP proposes grocery rebate to ease food costs

As grocery prices continue to soar, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles has unveiled a plan aimed at easing the financial strain on families. Stiles announced the Monthly Grocery Rebate, a program designed to put money back into the pockets of Ontarians struggling to keep up with rising food costs.

Speaking at a press conference, Stiles criticized Premier Doug Ford’s government, blaming it for the sharp rise in the price of essential goods like milk, bread, and vegetables over the past seven years. She emphasized that many Ontarians are being forced to make difficult choices at the grocery store, often cutting back on fresh produce or meat due to financial constraints.

“After seven long years of Doug Ford, groceries cost more than ever,” said Stiles. “Every week, families are forced to decide whether they can afford their kids’ favourite snack or if they should put it back on the shelf. Some people are avoiding fresh fruits and vegetables. Some have to skip beef or chicken.”

The proposed rebate program would provide monthly financial relief based on household income and family size. According to the Ontario NDP, the amount each family receives will be tied to the rise in the cost of essential food items since Ford took office.

Beyond financial relief, Stiles also pledged to take action against corporate price gouging, introducing new transparency measures for big grocery retailers. Under her plan, major grocery chains would be required to publicly disclose price increases of more than two per cent within a week. Additionally, a new oversight body would be created to monitor price fixing and enforce competition laws.

“We’ll crack down on price fixing and other unfair practices by establishing a new watchdog to keep food prices fair,” Stiles said. “Ontarians deserve better than being squeezed at the checkout by big corporations with little accountability.”

The Ontario NDP’s announcement comes amid growing public frustration over the affordability crisis, with food inflation outpacing wage growth and social assistance rates. The rising cost of living has become a major political issue, and Stiles’ proposal signals that the NDP intends to make grocery affordability a key election issue.

The Ford government has yet to respond to the NDP’s proposal. However, critics argue that broader economic factors, including supply chain disruptions and global inflation, have contributed to rising grocery prices, making it unclear how much provincial policies alone can alleviate the crisis.

With affordability concerns dominating political discourse, the Ontario NDP is betting that its rebate plan will resonate with voters seeking immediate relief from the financial pressures of everyday life. Whether the proposal gains traction with the electorate remains to be seen, but as Stiles makes affordability a central pillar of her platform, food prices are likely to remain a hot-button issue leading up to the next election.
