The Ontario government has announced the establishment of a new Youth Wellness Hub in Ajax, an initiative aimed at providing essential health and wellness services to young people in the Durham region. The announcement was made by MPP Patrice Barnes alongside fellow Durham representatives Peter Bethlenfalvy, Lorne Coe, and Todd McCarthy.

The new hub will serve youth aged 12 to 25, offering a range of services from mental health support and primary care to wellness programs. The Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) will be the lead agency overseeing the hub, working with a network of community partners to ensure accessibility for all youth, including those from Black, Indigenous, newcomer, and 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
“This initiative is truly inclusive,” said MPP Barnes. “Our youth are our future, and it is our responsibility to ensure they grow in environments that foster health and well-being.”
The Youth Wellness Hub is part of a province-wide expansion, with 10 new hubs being introduced. Since 2020, over 43,000 youth and their families have accessed services through existing hubs across Ontario. The Ajax location is expected to provide much-needed resources to the region, which has a significant youth population, including students from large high schools such as Notre Dame and J. Clarke Richardson.
Durham Community Health Centre CEO Francis Garwe emphasized the importance of community collaboration in ensuring the hub meets the unique needs of young people. “This is about youth. It’s about creating a space where they feel safe, supported, and empowered to take control of their health and well-being,” Garwe stated.

While a final site for the hub has not yet been disclosed, stakeholders are actively working to secure an appropriate location. In the interim, existing services at DCHC locations in Oshawa and Pickering will continue, with expanded programming to support youth.
The initiative has been widely praised by local leaders, including Ajax Ward 2 Councillor Nancy Henry. “We have lost too many youth to human trafficking, drug addiction, and homelessness. This project will be a game changer,” she said. “MPP Patrice Barnes has been instrumental in bringing this long-discussed initiative to life, and it will have a profound impact on our diverse community.”
Beyond providing direct health services, the hub is expected to offer programs that foster personal development, including arts, sports, and mentorship initiatives. Community members, including professionals from various fields, will have opportunities to engage with youth, further strengthening the support network.
The Durham representatives emphasized that this project is not just about delivering services but about ensuring long-term investment in the future of young people in the region. “Our legacy is to leave this province better than we found it,” said MPP Bethlenfalvy. “By supporting our youth today, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more resilient community for tomorrow.”
The government has yet to announce an official opening date for the hub, but discussions are underway to expedite the process and ensure services are available as soon as possible. For now, local partners are working to ensure that youth in Ajax and the surrounding areas can access the support they need while awaiting the completion of the new facility.
