The acclaimed documentary film, “Panazz: The Story,” is set to screen in Toronto on August 6 at the Royal Cinema, marking a fitting conclusion to the city’s carnival season. The event, held under the auspices of Consul General Ag. of the Republic Of Trinidad and Tobago, Tracey Ramsubagh Mannette, kicks off celebrations leading up to World Steelpan Day on August 11.
Directed by Adam Bartholomew and featuring Trinidad and Tobago’s renowned Chef Barry Bartholomew, “Panazz: The Story” offers an intimate portrayal of the Trinidad-jazz steelpan ensemble that made waves in the 1990s. The band achieved acclaim by winning the Pan Ramajay competition four consecutive times, spotlighting their improvisational prowess in small ensembles.
Transitioning from competitive success, the band pursued a professional path that saw them captivating audiences globally, from Boston Symphony Hall to prestigious venues across Japan. The documentary, recipient of the People’s Choice Award at the TT Film Festival last September, has been refined and remastered since then, leading to a re-release that commenced with Diaspora Carnival screenings in Boston and now includes Toronto and London in August.

Producer Barry Bartholomew expressed excitement about sharing the film’s surround sound experience with the steelpan community, Caribbean diaspora, and local Toronto audiences for the first time. He emphasized the immersive quality of the presentation, promising a special cinematic event.
Acting Consul General Tracey Ramsubagh Mannette highlighted the significance of World Steelpan Day, established last year, as an annual rallying point in August. She noted the recent official declaration of the steelpan as Trinidad and Tobago’s National Musical Instrument, underscoring the pioneering role of groups like Panazz as true ambassadors for the steelpan tradition. Mannette encouraged the community to embrace the film as a means to preserve and celebrate this cultural legacy.

The Toronto premiere is presented by the Canadian-Caribbean Arts Network (C-CAN) in partnership with Borden Place Inc. and iFEED, reflecting a collaborative effort to showcase and honor the rich cultural heritage embodied in “Panazz: The Story.”
