On a bright and sunny Saturday at Woodbine Racetrack, jockey Patrick Husbands once again demonstrated his prowess, taking two of the three races he competed in. The day marked a special milestone for Husbands as he celebrated 30 years of riding at the famed racetrack, and his performance left no doubt that he deserves a day named in his honor.
Husbands had three mounts in the sixth, eighth, and ninth races of the day. In the sixth race, Husbands started at the back of the pack. As the horses rounded the final turn, a fan in the crowd lamented, “He is nowhere close to the front.” Moments later, the same fan was shouting in excitement as Husbands made a remarkable move, guiding his horse to a stunning victory by about two lengths. This win set the tone for the day, with several VIP supporters of Husbands making their way to the cashiers to collect their winnings.

In the eighth race, Husbands didn’t find the same success, finishing third. However, the big race of the day, the ninth race, was where Husbands truly shined. Taking an early lead, he held off a strong challenge down the stretch to secure his second win of the day. His expert handling and strategic riding were evident as he crossed the finish line to the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd.
We had the opportunity to interview Husbands and some of his ardent supporters after the races. Husbands, reflecting on his three-decade career at Woodbine, expressed his gratitude for the unwavering support of his fans and the racing community. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he said. “Winning two races today is a perfect way to celebrate 30 years here. The support from the fans and my team has been phenomenal.”

Supporters in the crowd also shared their excitement and admiration for the jockey. “Patrick is a legend,” one fan stated. “Seeing him win today, especially in such a dramatic fashion, is why we come out to the track.”
