A significant investment in housing has been announced by the federal and provincial governments, with more than $28 million directed toward four developments that will add 599 affordable and mixed income homes across Peel Region in Ontario.

The funding, delivered through a combination of the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative, the Canada Ontario Community Housing Initiative, as well as the federal Rapid Housing Initiative and Affordable Housing Fund, is intended to increase access to secure housing for families, seniors and vulnerable residents.

One of the completed developments is Credit River Way at 200 Missinnihe Way in Mississauga. The seven storey rental building provides 150 units and was completed in October 2024. It offers one, two and three bedroom apartments and includes supports for low and moderate income residents with mobility needs. Built on former Imperial Oil lands in Port Credit, the site is part of a wider redevelopment focused on sustainability and waterfront access. The project received more than $12.4 million in provincial funding under the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative alongside a previously announced $24 million federal contribution.

Another Mississauga project, Creekside Apartments at 1639 Lakeshore Road West, will deliver 51 affordable homes for residents facing housing insecurity, including women, racialised communities and individuals living with mental health or physical challenges. The development is located near transit routes, schools and community services in the Clarkson area. It received $1.8 million through the Canada Ontario Community Housing Initiative and an additional $19.7 million from the federal Rapid Housing Initiative. Completion is expected between late 2026 and early 2027.

In Brampton, Chelsea Gardens at 6 Knightsbridge Drive will be a 20 storey affordable housing tower containing 200 units when finished in 2027. The building will be situated near transit, retail and public services and will include shared community spaces such as a library, kitchen and meeting rooms. It has received over $7.2 million in provincial support and $42.5 million in earlier federal funding through the Affordable Housing Fund.

Also in Brampton, Basswood Senior Residences at 527 Main Street North will provide 198 affordable rental units for seniors as part of Peel Region’s Campus of Care model. More than one third of the units will be fully wheelchair accessible. The project received over $6.9 million in provincial funding and $37 million in federal support and is also expected to be completed in 2027.

The announcement was made by Charles Sousa, Member of Parliament for Mississauga Lakeshore, who said the initiative is aimed at improving stability and opportunity for local residents. “Everyone deserves a roof over their head and a safe place to call home,” he said, adding that the investments would help families rebuild their lives.

“Chelsea Gardens in Brampton Centre represents a meaningful step forward in addressing the urgent need for affordable housing in our community, added Charmaine Wiliams, MPP for Brampton Centre.

“This investment will help deliver 50 new affordable homes for individuals and families who need it most, providing stability, dignity, and opportunity. I am proud to see our governments working together to bring real results to residents of Brampton Centre.”
