President of Barbados bids emotional farewell at parade

Barbados witnessed a moment of history and heartfelt reflection as President Sandra Mason delivered her final address to the men and women of the Barbados Defence Force and the Barbados Police Service. Speaking before a full parade of disciplined forces, she described the occasion as “humbling and profoundly meaningful,” marking the culmination of a journey that began with her appointment as Governor General and continued into her tenure as the inaugural President of the Barbadian Republic.

She reflected on the privilege of service, invoking the spirit of Marcus Aurelius: “When you arise in the morning, think of what a privilege it is to be alive… to enjoy, to love.” To that, she added, “the privilege of serving,” underscoring that her role as Commander-in-Chief was never merely ceremonial, but a solemn responsibility to uphold institutions that safeguard the nation’s democracy.

In a warm and deeply personal tribute, Mason praised the Defence Force and Police Service for their loyalty, discipline, and unwavering professionalism. She highlighted their work across land, sea, and cyberspace; their readiness during national challenges; and their contributions to regional humanitarian missions. “Your sense of duty has never faltered,” she said, noting the camaraderie and purpose that define their service.

The President also offered special acknowledgment to those who walked closely with her, including Police Commissioners Tyrone Griffith and Richard Boyce, former Chiefs of Staff Colonel Glein Granham, Commodore Errington Shurland, and Brigadier Carlos Lovell, as well as her aide-de-camp officers who supported her from 2012 through her presidency.

One of her most affectionate tributes was reserved for the Barbados Cadet Corps, who honoured her annually with precision drills and once formed the number “75” in celebration of her birthday. She proudly wore the medal they had presented to her.

As she prepares to demit office, the President expressed confidence in the future of Barbados’ armed and protective services. With gratitude and dignity, she concluded by urging them to continue upholding the highest ideals of service, reminding them that their contribution remains vital to the nation’s sovereignty, security, and future.
