Get ready, laughter lovers! On Saturday, September 27th at 7:30 pm, the Isabel Bader Theatre at the University of Toronto will host a special treat: A Comical Play on Love, starring Trinidad & Tobago’s own Rodel “Ro’dey” Cumberbatch. The show marks his 10‑year anniversary in entertainment and promises to showcase his unique brand of humour, his many beloved characters, and a strong supporting cast.

Rodel “Ro’dey” Cumberbatch.

Ro’dey is no stranger to Toronto’s Caribbean community, but this production turns the spotlight fully on love—romantic love, self‑love, family love—and all its messy, hilarious complications.

Ro’dey commands a formidable presence on social media, boasting over approximately 1M followers across Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads and YouTube. His sharp wit, relatable humour, and infectious energy have enraptured fans worldwide, making him a sought-after influence for both local and international brands.

Fans can expect to see many of Ro’dey’s most beloved characters on stage, including Miss Janice, Trevor, Fleeky, Pinky, Buck, and AhriteDeh among others. Each character brings a different slice of Trinidadian life to the stage, from exaggerated neighbourhood personalities to hilariously relatable family members. While not all 25 of his characters have been confirmed for the show, audiences can definitely expect plenty of surprises and familiar faces throughout the night.

Joining Ro’dey on stage will be Trinidadian theatre icon Penelope Spencer. A San Fernando native, “Auntie Pennie” has been a fixture in the performing arts for over three decades. Her career has spanned acting, dance, teaching, directing, writing, and casting, earning her numerous Cacique Awards for both leading and supporting roles. She began her artistic journey with the Arawak Dance Company and now serves as Artistic Director of Necessary Arts Productions, where she continues to mentor and uplift the next generation of Caribbean creatives.

Also taking the stage is Toronto’s own Jean Paul, a Trinidadian-born, Canadian-raised comedian whose laid-back delivery and sharp humour have made him a fan favourite across North America and beyond. Jean Paul has performed internationally, gracing stages like the Apollo in New York and the Comedy Store in London. He’s been featured on CBC, CityTV’s Breakfast Television, and the Just For Laughs comedy festival, consistently bringing audiences to tears with his clever, culturally grounded observations.

A Comical Play on Love promises to be more than just a night of laughs—it’s a celebration of Caribbean love, identity, and connection. Through his characters and storytelling, Ro’dey explores the highs and lows of relationships with humour and heart, making the show both wildly entertaining and emotionally resonant.

Toronto’s Caribbean community and comedy fans at large won’t want to miss this unforgettable evening of storytelling, laughter, and cultural pride. The event takes place at the Isabel Bader Theatre on Saturday, September 27th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available now at rodeytheentertainer.com.

This is more than a comedy show—it’s a milestone moment for one of the Caribbean’s brightest comedic stars. Come out and be part of the celebration.
