Royal Canadian Mint Honours Hogan’s Alley With 2025 Coin

The Royal Canadian Mint is paying tribute to a significant chapter in Canadian history with its “2025 Fine Silver Commemorating Black History” coin, which was released on February 4, 2025. This coin honours Hogan’s Alley, a historic Black community that once thrived in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighborhood until it was demolished in the 1970s for a road viaduct project.

Hogan’s Alley, established in the late 19th century, became a vital hub for Black families, porters working for the Great Northern Railway, and entrepreneurs who ran small businesses, entertainment venues, and beloved restaurants. It was a place of culture, resilience, and unity—a Black community where art, music, and activism flourished. Yet, this thriving neighborhood was destroyed when the city prioritized urban development over the preservation of its cultural significance, resulting in the loss of a unique part of Vancouver’s heritage.

In recognition of Hogan’s Alley’s legacy, the Mint’s 2025 collector coin features a design that brings the spirit of the neighborhood back to life. The reverse side of the coin, created by artist Kwame Delfish, showcases a rich collage of figures representing Hogan’s Alley’s diverse cultural and artistic life. Included are a cook from a women-owned restaurant, a railway porter, dancers, musicians, and a choir, symbolizing the area’s lively entertainment scene. At the center of the design is the Pacific Dogwood, British Columbia’s provincial flower, adding a local touch to the artwork.

This coin is more than just a collectible; it’s a tribute to a lost community and the people who made it thrive. Djaka Blais, Executive Director of the Hogan’s Alley Society, reflects on its importance: “This commemorative coin is a meaningful acknowledgment of the history and spirit of Hogan’s Alley, and we hope it inspires ongoing efforts to honor and restore the legacy of this vibrant community.”

For the Mint, this coin represents a broader commitment to preserving the diverse stories of Canada’s heritage. Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint, stated, “Crafting coins that breathe new life into stories that reflect the full breadth of Canada’s heritage…highlight fascinating chapters of Black history in Canada.”

The coin’s obverse features the iconic maple leaf pattern and an effigy of King Charles III, further linking this piece to Canada’s identity. The mintage of this commemorative coin is limited to only 5,000, with a retail price of $119.95, available for purchase through the Mint’s website, its boutiques, Canada Post outlets, and a global network of dealers.

Kwame Delfish, the artist behind the design, emphasized the cultural significance of the piece: “A thriving cultural hub that encompassed music, art, and activism…strengthened solidarity and bolstered collective pride. I hope I was able to capture the essence of this distinct community.”
