Scarborough East BGC and FLOW unite for hurricane relief
Jamaica has confronted one of the most devastating natural disasters in its modern history. Hurricane Melissa, a catastrophic Category 5 storm with winds of 185 mph, tore across St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Clarendon, Westmoreland, Trelawny, and St. James Parish, regions central to the island’s agricultural and economic stability.

Entire communities have been left in ruins. More than 30,000 people are displaced, hospitals are heavily damaged, and national recovery mechanisms have been activated, including a US $70.8 million CCRIF payout, a potential US $150 million CAT-bond trigger, and US $400 million in contingency support. Yet the needs remain overwhelming.
For Toronto’s Jamaican diaspora, approximately 145,000 strong, including nearly 20,000 in Scarborough, this crisis is deeply personal. Families across the GTA are urgently seeking ways to support loved ones and ancestral communities as the scale of the disaster becomes clear.
In response, BGC East Scarborough, through its MAAT Youth Innovation and Cultural Center at 62 Orchard Park Drive, will host what is expected to be Scarborough’s largest relief initiative: Barrels of Hope, Jamaica Relief Drive, on Saturday, December 13th. The effort is led by FLOW 98.7FM, the Farex Music Foundation, Jazz Me Foundation, The It Factor Ltd., and Matrix Cares, organizations known for grassroots engagement and community outreach.

From 12 PM to 4 PM, FLOW 98.7FM will broadcast live from the MAAT Center. Hosting the broadcast is Canada’s Reggae Ambassador SPEXDABOSS, a proud Scarborough native and former participant of BGC East Scarborough’s Galloway programs. His presence brings cultural pride and an emotional connection to the mission. After the broadcast, he will continue DJing until 8 PM to keep energy high as volunteers sort and pack donations.
This year’s target is the largest ever: 100 barrels filled with emergency supplies such as non-perishable food, hygiene products, baby items, first-aid materials, tarps, flashlights, and essential tools.
The Jazz Me Foundation, led by 13-year-old humanitarian Jazmin Headley, will coordinate packing, volunteers, transportation, and direct delivery to families in Jamaica, including those in hard-hit St. James Parish.
For BGC East Scarborough, hosting the initiative reflects its commitment to empowerment, unity, and youth leadership.
On December 13th, 62 Orchard Park Drive will become a centre of hope as Scarborough stands with Jamaica in its greatest time of need.
Together, we rise again, and your support makes the difference.
