In a bid to address the growing issue of illegal firearms and ammunition, St Kitts and Nevis has initiated a 15-day gun amnesty, effective from Friday, May 10 to Saturday, May 25, 2024. This move follows the recent enactment of the Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2024.
Prime Minister Terrance Drew announced the gun amnesty in Parliament, emphasizing that during this period, individuals will have the opportunity to surrender any illegal firearms or ammunition at any police station across both islands without fear of prosecution. Additionally, individuals can also deliver illegal firearms or ammunition to any attorney at law, who is obligated to hand over these items to the nearest police station.

Those who voluntarily surrender illegal firearms or ammunition will not be required to disclose their identity or provide any information. Furthermore, no personal details will be recorded if individuals opt to utilize the anonymous process of the Firearms Amnesty.
The Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2024, which facilitated the implementation of the gun amnesty, imposes stricter penalties for the possession of illegal firearms. Offenders now face a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in prison, along with a hefty fine of EC$500,000.
The launch of the gun amnesty underscores the government’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms and ensuring public safety in St Kitts and Nevis. Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to surrender illegal weapons and contribute to a safer community for all.
