Prime Minister Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis recently held a groundbreaking meeting with the newly elected Speaker of the House of Commons in Canada, Hon. Greg Fergus. This diplomatic rendezvous, which took place on October 17, 2023, in the Canadian capital, Ottawa, signifies a new chapter in the bilateral ties between these two nations.

Speaker Fergus, who made history by becoming the first Black Speaker of the House of Commons in Canada, welcomed Prime Minister Drew as the first foreign dignitary to meet him since his election. The significance of this meeting was underscored by the presence of key figures, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador to CARICOM, and Charge d’Affaires ad interim.

The discussions between Prime Minister Drew and Speaker Fergus primarily revolved around strengthening the already close bilateral collaboration. Canada’s recent partial visa waiver for Saint Kitts and Nevis citizens was acknowledged with gratitude, with Prime Minister Drew advocating for improved ease of travel to further boost trade, tourism, and investment between the two nations.

Moreover, Prime Minister Drew highlighted the investment potential in Saint Kitts and Nevis, particularly in sectors such as green technology, renewable energy, and water and food security. He emphasized the Federation’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law as the foundation for fruitful trade and commerce.

Education and capacity building also featured prominently in the discussions, with Prime Minister Drew urging Speaker Fergus to consider initiatives for skills training, particularly in the green and blue economy.

As a symbol of appreciation, Prime Minister Drew presented Speaker Fergus with a framed photograph by Kittitian-born Professor Tau Battice, representing the resilience and spirit of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
