Water Crisis Forces St. Lucia to Import from Dominica

Saint Lucia is taking emergency measures to ease a growing water crisis by arranging imports from Dominica, officials confirmed during a pre-cabinet press briefing on Monday. The plan, led by the private sector, is aimed at supporting hotels and resorts during a severe dry spell at the height of the tourist season.

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre explained that the Saint Lucia Water and Sewage Company, known as WASCO, is collaborating with multiple government ministries and the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association to manage the imports. “We’ve been discussing with the people who are building the resorts at Rodney Bay, and we’ve been told that the jetty there can accommodate a barge with water,” he said.

PM Pierre stressed that the operation will follow strict safety protocols, including water testing, regulatory approvals, and distribution planning to ensure the supply is uncontaminated. The first shipment is expected to arrive at Mount Rodney Bay on March 19.

Officials noted that the island’s water shortage is caused by an unusually dry season with low rainfall and depleted river flows, which have left both residents and the tourism sector vulnerable. Alongside the import plan, the partnership between WASCO and the SLHTA is exploring desalination as a potential long-term solution to prevent future shortages.
