Renowned political scientist Dr. Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith has made his foray into fiction with the release of Sylvie’s Love and Loss, a captivating narrative set in the heart of Grenada. The novel explores themes of love, resilience, betrayal, and redemption against the backdrop of the Caribbean’s lively culture.
The story follows Sylvie, a young woman abandoned by her parents who is forced into adulthood. Working at a hotel in Grenada, she falls in love with a Canadian guest and dreams of a new life in Canada. However, her hopes are dashed when an affair with a Captain leads to betrayal, imprisonment, and deportation. Returning to Grenada, Sylvie must navigate new challenges and temptations while rebuilding her life.

Spanning countries like Guyana, Jamaica, Canada, and Venezuela, the novel highlights the far-reaching impacts of drug trafficking. Dr. Griffith, an expert in Caribbean national security and drug issues, uses his academic experience to portray the region’s complex social landscape.
Dr. Griffith shared that the novel’s inspiration came from a 1994 encounter with a young woman in Grenada, who was deported for drug trafficking. “Her story sparked my interest in exploring the complexities of drugs, family struggles, and resilience through fiction,” he said.
Originally titled Victims, the novel delves into the devastating effects of drug trafficking, offering a message of redemption and resilience. Dr. Griffith aimed to reveal “the Caribbean’s layered reality—its love, loss, highs, lows, and the enduring spirit within its communities.”
Since its release in September, Sylvie’s Love and Loss has received praise from Caribbean literary figures such as Harold Bascom and Ambassador David Dabydeen. Professor Terrence Richard Blackman of Medgar Evers College called it “a gripping narrative that takes readers on an emotional and cultural voyage across the Caribbean,” noting its portrayal of both personal and political struggles.
Dr. Griffith, who retired in 2019, has held leadership positions, including President of Fort Valley State University and Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana. He has authored nine scholarly books, including Drugs and Security in the Caribbean, and has been recognized with the William J. Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defense Education.
With Sylvie’s Love and Loss, Dr. Griffith transitions from academia to fiction, offering readers a thought-provoking exploration of Caribbean love, loss, and resilience.
