Last Saturday, Taibu Community Health held a wellness fair in Scarborough to provide health education, awareness, and information on pertaining to various physical and mental well-being concerns to the community. The event was well-attended, attracting over 200 people to the Center for the event.
The fair included a range of health information and activities, such as cancer screening information, men’s health and wellness presentation, a workout session, healthy eating workshops, breast cancer presentation, a Caribbean dance session, kidney health discussion, stress management techniques, and a talk on sickle cell disease.
Tameka Shaw, Taibu’s manager of primary care services, explained that the event’s goal was to provide education and awareness information and access to services for interested and eligible community members. The fair also provided various health screenings for cancer, blood pressure, and blood sugar, along with distribution of HIV self-test kits.
Attendees showed a positive engagement in the event and a desire to learn more about their health and access to care. Taibu was successful in connecting people to care, including those who did not have access to services or had high blood pressure.
Interested individuals can fill out registration forms to access Taibu’s primary care and health promotion services. Those who do not have a primary care provider can fill out Taibu’s primary care registration form and go through the primary care registration process to become a primary care client. This will give them access to nursing practitioners or family doctors to access other services.
