Mark Fraser is one of the premier defencemen that have played for the Lowell Devils. He is now playing in the New Jersey Devils where he is considered a rising star. His career has been going steady upwards since 2009 and he has been getting more and more ice time and responsibility. Recently he has however been moving up and down between AHL and NHL and it is therefore hard to predict how his career will progress in the future.
Fraser was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on September 29, 1986. He is 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m) and weighs 200 lb (91 kg; 14 st 4 lbs). He was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 2005 in the 3rd round as the 84th pick. He did however not move up to play for the New Jersey Devils until 2007. He is a left sided shot.
Prior to becoming a professional player Fraser played for the Gloucester Rangers before moving on to the Kitchener Rangers, a team playing in the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). He played in this team between 2004 and 2006, and started his professional career late in the 2005-06 season by joining the Albany River Rats. He played a total of four games with this team.
2006-07 was Frasers first full season as a professional hockey player and he played this season in the Lowell Devils. In 2006, he played 7 games in the NHL after the coach had noticed his aggressive physical style and thought it would be beneficial to the New Jersey Devils. Fraser was however moved back down to the AHL team Lowell Devils where he played until he once again made the New Jersey Devils for the 2009-2010 season. He played a total of 3 seasons in Lowell Devils. He scored his first ever NHL goal in October of his first season, in a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
During the 2010-11 season Fraser has been moved up and down between the Albany Devils and the New Jersey Devils. He has however played far more games in the NHL this season than in the AHL. He played 5 games in the Albany Devils compared to 26 games in the New Jersey Devils.
As a rising black star in the NHL, Mark Fraser is a role model and inspiration to many as the sport still do not have many black players.
Mark Fraser is not an overly technical player and although a solid defenceman he does not do much forward. This is reflected by his total of a mere 3 goals in the NHL. He is a very physical player that often gets into fights and can be very rough near the rink. He is by no means an enforcer, but he also never backs down from a fight
