The Parang Lime lives on

Kolin Alexander

For parang lovers in Toronto, it was the major musical event of the season – the annual Soca Parang Lime at the Metropolitan Center in Scarborough.

Many of us parang soca lovers thought that the show would not go on because there could be no parang without our queen Joan Alexander who promoted the event for 18 years and died on February 5th 2022 at home in Markham.

But her children, with Kolin leading the charge, decided to do a tribute to their late mother. The people of Toronto responded with great fervor as hundreds of them showed up to support the effort thereby keeping the unofficial title of Toronto Best Parang. And more good news: the show, now called Joan Alexander’s Friends and family Parang Lime, will be back next year even bigger and better.

The show on Sunday featured La Petite Musicale of Toronto, Richard Luces, Earl LaPierre, Los Amigos, and Toronto’s top DJs Soca Vibes, Dr. Jay, and Soca Sweetness, and Dj Undercover.

The big announcement at the event was that there is a new $10.000 scholarship award located at the Toronto Metropolitan University for nursing and the arts in the name of Joan Alexander annually.

See you next year at the Parang Lime.
