PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Calypsonian Samuel ‘Brigo’ Abraham “died” on social media for about 20 minutes last Thursday after a fellow Calypsonian declared he passed away and posted a tribute about his life and career.
The post generated many comments from Brigo fans, who know him as much for his music and comedy as for a series of TV and newspaper ads where he sings the benefits of using the canned insecticide Det.
Other Calypsonians, in learning of the “passing” scrambled to make contact with the family and telephoned his house. Brigo answered the phone.
His friend Ras Kommanda said, “I contacted another Calypsonian who said she had spoken with Brigo at 7:46 this morning. I contacted him shortly after 10 and he is alive and kicking. It is just a rumour.”
Lutalo Masimba, president of Trinidad Unified Calypsonians Organization (TUCO) confirmed that “he (Brigo) is alive and well. We don’t know how that rumour started. The organization spoke to him this morning and we spoke to his daughter as well. He is resting.”
Asked if the Calypsonian was ill at all, Masimba replied “not as far as we know.”
The post that fuelled the rumour stated: “Trinidad and Tobago Has Lost Another Griot. The Barrack Yard Tent Experience Has Lost A Champion Soldier. THE MOST HANDSOME IN CALYPSO. Griot Samuel Abraham. THE BRIGO R.I.P.”
