More than 100 young cricketers from schools in the Greater Toronto Area received medals of excellence at the launch last Thursday of the Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament 2018.
Fifteen schools also received awards.
The launch at the Central Tech Stadium marked the eighth anniversary of the tournament which has grown from 10 teams in 2011 to 150 teams in 2017.
The 2018 tournament will be held at Sunnybrook Park and G. Ross Lord Park May 15 -31.
Main sponsor of this year’s event is the Canadian Tire Corporation. Participating teams will compete for the Canadian Tire Trophy.
Before the presentation of awards, Mayor John Tory, Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development and and Mahes Wickramasinghe, Chief Corporate Officer of Canadian Tire Corporation, joined the young cricketers for a demonstration of the sport at the stadium.
Noting that cricket is part of the cultural heritage of many Torontonians, Mayor Tory said it
was a pleasure to meet many young cricketers ” who are building a healthy, active lifestyle as well as leadership skills.”
” From our playgrounds to recreational sports leagues all the way to our high performance athletes, sport is vital to the cultural fabric of our city,” he added.
Helen Berhane, chairman of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), organizer of the tournament, thanked Police Services Board member Kenneth Jeffers who helped form the partnership between the City of Toronto and CIMA and the City of Toronto’s Parks and Recreation Department for ” the continued support to grow the sport of cricket in schools.”
