Tranquillity picnic unites generations through fun

Families from across the Greater Toronto Area gathered this weekend as the Tranquillity Alumni of Canada hosted its annual community picnic, at Earl Bales Park into a celebration of friendship, tradition and togetherness.

The moment the festivities got underway in the afternoon, the unmistakable aromas of stewed chicken, macaroni pie and callaloo drifted through the park as families unpacked picnic baskets and shared home-cooked dishes. Guests moved from table to table greeting old friends, meeting new ones and sampling each other’s culinary favourites while calypso and soca music provided the soundtrack for the day’s festivities.

Although organized by the Tranquillity Alumni, the annual picnic has long evolved into an event that welcomes everyone, regardless of where they call home. Visitors from Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, St. Kitts and Canada mingled throughout the day, creating the warm and welcoming atmosphere that has become the hallmark of the gathering.

The highlight for many families was the children’s sports programme. Youngsters from as young as three years old through their early teens enthusiastically competed in traditional games, track, including bag races and egg-and-spoon races. For many parents and grandparents, it was a welcome sight to see children putting aside their electronic devices and simply enjoying the pleasures of running, laughing and playing outdoors.

Parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents lined the sidelines cheering on the competitors, creating an atmosphere where every child felt like a winner. Organizers ensured that no participant went home empty-handed. While the top finishers received trophies and ribbons, every child who took part was recognized with participation awards, reinforcing the event’s emphasis on inclusion and encouragement rather than competition alone.

Members of the Tranquillity Alumni say the annual picnic has become one of the organization’s most cherished traditions, helping strengthen community ties while creating lasting memories for younger generations. Some families have attended for more than two decades, and today the children and even grandchildren of the original participants are taking part in the same races their parents once enjoyed.

Organizers hope to see even more children participate next year, noting that all events are free and open to everyone. Families are simply encouraged to bring their picnic baskets, enjoy a relaxing day in the park and become part of an extended community.

The Tranquillity Alumni’s annual picnic is traditionally held on the first Sunday in July, and organizers are already inviting families to mark their calendars for another day of fun, fellowship and community spirit next year.
