Trinidad-born dress designer dies in Toronto at 89

Trinidad-born dress designer Genevieve Clothilda Thomas nee Lezama died  on June 21 last in  Toronto after a long illness. She was 89.

Thomas ran Genevieve de Paris, a small dress shop on Bloor Street in Toronto, and was known by many in the Caribbean community for her exquisite bridal outfits.

She was also the publisher of The Caribbean Chronicle, a small community newspaper which folded in  the 1960s.

Journalist Darryl Dean who was her partner for more than  40 years, described her as  “kind and generous. ”

He said that she was diagnosed with dementia in  2008.

She leaves three children – her daughter, Bernadette, and her sons, Laurence and Richard.

Her eldest son, Garnett, died in Trinidad in 1977.

A funeral service for Genevieve Clothilda Thomas was held in Mississauga on  June 26 last.
