T&T Independence celebrations cancelled amid security concerns

Independence Day celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago have been called off due to security concerns involving high-level government and state officials. Legal Affairs Minister Saddam Hosein and Minister of National Security Roger Alexander made the announcement Thursday evening during a press conference at the Attorney General’s Office in Port-of-Spain.

The decision affects both the traditional Independence Day Parade and the state-funded fireworks display. According to Hosein, government received urgent advice from national security authorities within the 24 hours preceding the announcement, warning against the convergence of political leaders, members of the judiciary, and the Defence Force in one location.

“Given the circumstances, we ask citizens of Trinidad and Tobago to instead observe a day of prayer and reflection for the success and prosperity of our republic,” said Hosein.

Though Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro stated earlier in the week that the threat from a declared State of Emergency had been neutralised, Alexander clarified that investigations are still ongoing and that the threat has not been completely eliminated. “Even if the threat level is lowered, it does not mean it has been eradicated,” he said.

Responding to questions about whether the celebrations could have been restructured rather than cancelled, Hosein said comparisons with other political gatherings, such as the United National Congress’ Monday Night Forum, were misguided. The scale and nature of Independence Day events, he said, involve a significantly higher concentration of high-risk targets.

Opposition critics, particularly from the People’s National Movement, accused the Government of using security as a cover for financial constraints. Hosein denied this, insisting the decision was based solely on protecting lives. He also noted that the funds saved would support national security operations.

Fireworks were also addressed, with Alexander stating that noisy displays are not permitted. Only silent fireworks may be used with proper permits. He added that the Government is fulfilling its promise to protect the elderly, animals, and vulnerable populations from distress caused by loud fireworks.

Reactions from citizens were mixed. Some, like Khadedria Lyons in Tobago, called for both prayer and celebration. Others questioned why the parade itself could not proceed. Still, some residents supported the Government’s caution, given the country remains under a State of Emergency.
