Mya Hosein, a 14-year old Trinidadian-Canadian honours student from Durham, was the first pitch athlete for the Toronto Blue Jays major league game last Thursday.

“This experience was a great learning process,” said Mya, a recipient of the Ontario Principals Council Leadership Award.

“My goal is to continue to have a positive impact on the community and future generations,” she added.

After completing the Jays Care Leadership In Training program, she was contacted by The Jays Foundation and advised that due to her outstanding performance, she had been selected to be the First Pitch Athlete at last Thursday’s game.

She told The Caribbean Camera that she watches baseball on television and has now become more interested in the sport “having done the first pitch.”

Her favourite team? The Blue Jays.

For the younger generation she has a message: “Stay positive and reach for the skies. Never give up.”
