San Fernando court

SAN FERNANDO, Trinidad – A man from San Fernando, accused of raping his wife, was granted $100, 000 bail when his matter came up for hearing  earlier this week.

The 57-year-old father of three appeared virtually before Senior Magistrate Indrani Cedeno, charged with raping his wife last week.

According to the prosecution,  his 35-year-old wife reported to police last Thursday that she was in her bedroom when the accused raped her. Officers of the Gender-Based Violence Unit investigated and days later, PC Sylvan arrested and charged the man.

Police prosecutor Cleyon Seedan did not object to bail, telling the court that the accused did not have a criminal record.

In granting bail, Cedeno presented the accused with a cash alternative of $4,000 with the condition that he refrain from contacting his wife.

She adjourned the matter to January 19.
