The United Nations Security Council has authorized the deployment of a new multinational Gang Suppression Force (GSF) in Haiti, aimed at restoring order amid escalating violence and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The resolution, jointly sponsored by Panama and the United States, passed with 12 votes in favour and three abstentions, from China, Pakistan, and Russia.

Under an initial 12-month mandate, the 5,550-member force will work closely with the Haitian National Police and armed forces to dismantle powerful gangs, secure key infrastructure, and safeguard humanitarian access. It will also focus on protecting vulnerable populations, supporting the reintegration of former fighters, and strengthening local institutions.

The GSF replaces the Kenyan-led mission that struggled to gain traction following Kenya’s withdrawal earlier this year. The new coalition represents a renewed international commitment to Haiti’s stability after years of political turmoil and gang dominance in Port-au-Prince and beyond.

In a statement, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) welcomed the decision, calling it “a fundamental step that responds to the urgency of the security situation in Haiti,” and extended thanks to the resolution’s co-authors for their leadership in addressing the crisis
