UNI-TNT continues its fundraising for charitable causes in the Caribbean with its annual picnic on Saturday, August 24th at the Markham Fairgrounds.
President of UNI-TNT, Carlos Maharaj, says the group is only 3 years old but has already attracted thousands of members from the Caribbean diaspora, “We are young but powerful. As a charity group, we are focused on giving back to those in need, mainly in the Caribbean, especially in times of disaster,” Maharaj says.
“For example when Dominica was hit by Hurricane Maria, we donated about $10,000.00 worth of relief supplies to the Dominica relief effort. Most recently, we shipped wheelchairs to a hospital in Trinidad, and we continue to look for opportunities to give back, and to help.” This year, the proceeds of the annual picnic will be donated to the sick children’s ward at the San Fernando hospital in Trinidad.
Maharaj says the UNI-TNT annual picnic has been growing in popularity and will feature vendors, live entertainment including the “Exodus” band, kids zone and the very popular, international curry duck competition, where the chef of the most tasty curry duck will win a $500 prize.
“We will also be holding a major raffle where the first prize is a ticket from Caribbean Airlines with a set of luggage; 2nd prize will also be a ticket from Caribbean Airlines, “Maharaj reveals.
He says that at the low $15 entry fee, the group anticipates a crowd of 5000 people, all looking to re-connect with family and friends and enjoy the diverse entertainment and food.
The UNI-TNT Picnic will be held at the Markham Fairgrounds, 10801 McCowen Road.
