Trinidad-born carnival artist David Albert Heath died at the Etobicoke General hospital in Toronto on May 8 last.He was 79.
His sister, Dawn, told The Caribbean Camera that the verteran mas’ man died from a statph infection.
She recalled that he started playing mas’ and making costumes at an early age in his native Trinidad.
“For many years he played with the legendary Stephen Lee Heung who won ‘band of the year’ several times at the Trinidad carnival,”
Soon after he came to Canada in 1975, Heath was ” actively involved in the Toronto Carnival .”
He was well known among carnival aficionados in Canada as a talented mas’ player and costume designer.
He won “king of the bands” in the Toronto Carnival with ” Cornocopia ” in the The Associates Cultural Club led by Jose Machado.
Joan Alexander, longtime promoter of the popular annual Parang Lime in Toronto, described Heath as “a committed mas’ man” and a “fantastic dancer.”
“He was my dancing partner at many parang events and we won a few competitions as a dancing couple.”
He leaves his sisters, Astrid, Dianne, Heather and Dawn and nephews and nieces.
A funeral service for the late David Albert Heath was held at the G. H. Hogle funeral home in Toronto on Saturday.
A “celebration of life” for David Heath and his brother, Allan who died on April 13 last, will be held on a date to be fixed
