On June 7, 2025, members of the Greater Toronto Area community will lace up their sneakers and take to the trails for the Walk the Path Walkathon, an annual event organized by The Walnut Foundation (TWF) to raise awareness and funds in the fight against prostate cancer, particularly in Black communities.

Hosted at the Paul Palleschi Recreation Centre in Brampton, the walkathon is more than just a fundraiser; it is a life-saving campaign rooted in education, early detection, and collective action. Black men are 76 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from the disease compared to other groups, making outreach and screening efforts all the more urgent.

“The statistics are alarming, but knowledge and early action can save lives,” said Anthony Henry, President of The Walnut Foundation and a prostate cancer survivor. “As men, we often put our health last, but we can’t afford to stay silent. Through this event, we’re breaking the stigma and ensuring more men get the support they need.”

Henry, also a certified Prostate Cancer Peer Navigator, brings both professional and personal experience to his advocacy. He is one of four men in his family who have faced the disease, and he’s committed to making a difference in the lives of others.

This year’s Walkathon features Dr. Gervan Fearon, President of George Brown College, as its Honorary Chair. Dr. Fearon is also a prostate cancer survivor and a nationally respected leader in education and public service.

“I had no symptoms and was unaware of what the signs were, it was a routine screening that likely saved my life,” said Dr. Fearon. “Too many men ignore the warning signs, but awareness saves lives. I’m walking to ensure more men talk about their health and take action.”

Participants are encouraged to register, donate, or simply help raise awareness using the hashtag #WalkThePath2025. Funds raised support prostate cancer education, early screening initiatives, and peer-led support programs.
