Wesley J. Hall, a prominent business leader and a staunch advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion, has been elected as the next chancellor of the University of Toronto. Hall will begin his three-year term on July 1, 2024, becoming the 35th chancellor in the university’s history since its founding in 1827.

Hall’s election followed a rigorous selection process chaired by Candice Jay and conducted by the College of Electors. The college, established in 1971, comprises members from the University of Toronto Alumni Association and is tasked with electing alumni governors and the chancellor.

Meric Gertler, president of U of T, praised Hall’s appointment, noting his qualifications and commitment to creating opportunities for disadvantaged communities. “Dr. Wesley Hall is a widely respected and inspirational business leader, and he is deeply committed to creating opportunities for disadvantaged individuals and communities,” said Gertler. “His professional and personal accomplishments make him eminently qualified for the position of chancellor.”

Hall is the Executive Chairman and Founder of WeShall Investments, Kingsdale Advisors, and the BlackNorth Initiative. He has significantly impacted the lives of thousands of children in the Caribbean and Canada through his philanthropic efforts and mentoring of Black entrepreneurs and leaders.

Anna Kennedy, chair of U of T’s Governing Council, expressed her excitement about Hall’s appointment, highlighting his dedication to empowering marginalized groups. “Dr. Hall’s remarkable achievements in the business world and unwavering dedication to empowering marginalized groups resonate deeply with the University of Toronto’s values of equity and inclusivity,” said Kennedy.
