West Indies will need to navigate another qualifying campaign before they can secure a place at the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup, extending a difficult period for one of cricket’s most decorated teams.

The two-time World Cup champions are currently ranked 10th in the ICC ODI standings and cannot move into the automatic qualification places before the September 30 cut off. Their remaining two matches against India fall before that date, but even two victories would not be enough to lift them into the required position.
Automatic qualification goes to the top eight teams in the ODI rankings, excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. Afghanistan moved into the qualifying group after defeating Ireland in Belfast. Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England and Bangladesh have also secured their places alongside the two hosts.
For West Indies, the route to the tournament will therefore run through the Qualifier in February next year. The team faced the same challenge before the 2023 World Cup but finished fifth in the Super Six stage and failed to advance.
That campaign produced a historic low. West Indies missed their first ever ODI World Cup and subsequently failed to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy, a tournament they had not missed since 2013.
The new qualification system offers little room for error. The winner of the February Qualifier will advance directly to the second round of the 2027 World Cup. The teams finishing second, third and fourth will enter a Super Series, with only the winner advancing to the second round.
The Qualifier field will include Ireland and West Indies as the two lowest ranked non host Full Members on September 30, 2026. Four teams from Cricket World Cup League 2 will also qualify, along with four teams emerging from a separate World Cup Qualifier Playoff.
That playoff will feature the bottom four League 2 teams and four sides from the Challenge League. The Challenge League itself consists of 12 teams divided into two groups of six, with each group playing 3 round robin tournaments during the qualification cycle.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoff, from which four teams will progress to the Qualifier.
For West Indies, the task is clear. A team once accustomed to dominating world cricket must now survive a lengthy qualification process simply to earn another opportunity on the game’s biggest stage.
