The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Four-Day Tournament kicks off this Friday, February 28th. In the opening round, Windward Islands will play defending champions Barbados at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. Jamaica will host Guyana at Sabina Park, Jamaica and on March 01-04, the Leeward Islands will play the Combined Campuses & Colleges at Warner Park in St Kitts.
The second round will played from March 07-10, Guyana vs Barbados at the Providence Stadium, Guyana. Leeward Islands vs Jamaica at Warner Park, St Kitts and Trinidad & Tobago vs the Windward Islands at the Queen”s Park Oval in Trinidad.
According to the WICB, this year the tournament will see the introduction of a batting and bowling points system in an effort to encourage positive play. The teams participating in the tournament will be playing for two trophies this year. The team that accumulate the most points following the seven preliminary round matches will be awarded the WICB President”s Trophy and will qualify as one of the four teams for the semi-finals.
The semi-finals are scheduled to be played on April 19-22 and the final from April 25-28, the venues TBC. The winner of the tournament will receive the George Headley/Everton Weeks Trophy.
According to the new West Indies Cricket Board Director of Cricket Richard Pybus, he is looking forward to this year”s Regional 4-Day Tournament to further understand the depth of talent in the Caribbean.
Pubus said the new first-class season will be a chance for him to further devise a strategy to bring the best talent to the surface in a bid to take the West Indies team back to the pinnacle of the game.
