Toronto’s famous Woodbine Racetrack is set to dazzle in the colours of Barbados as it hosts a special celebration on Saturday, May 18, 2024, dubbed “Patrick Husbands Day.” This event honors the illustrious 30-year career of one of Canada’s most celebrated jockeys, Patrick Husbands, whose contributions to horse racing have made him a household name, especially within the Caribbean community.
Husbands, a native of Barbados, has left an indelible mark on Canadian horse racing. Over the years, he has secured numerous accolades, including the prestigious Canadian Triple Crown and three Queen’s Plate victories, showcasing his skill and dedication to the sport. His journey to Woodbine has been nothing short of legendary.
The festivities on May 18 will commence right after the first race, with a main tribute and ceremony planned to honor the Barbados born jockey’s stellar career and his enduring impact on the sport. This event promises to be a grand celebration, reflecting not only Husbands’ achievements but also his role as a bridge between Canada and the Caribbean through his success.
Further elevating his legacy, Husbands is slated for induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame later this year, a testament to his status as one of the greatest athletes in the sport, whose fame may not have reached all ears despite his impressive accomplishments.
In 2023, Husbands was also awarded the Impact Award, recognizing his significant contributions to sports and his role as an influential figure within the Caribbean diaspora. His recognition resonates with a sense of pride across Barbados and the broader Caribbean, celebrating not just his victories but his character and the inspiration he provides to aspiring athletes.
This year marks 30 years since Husbands’ arrival at Woodbine, and what he has accomplished over those decades is nothing short of extraordinary – more than 3,600 career wins, 3 King’s Plate victories, including 2003, when he took the Canadian Triple Crown (Plate, Prince of Wales, and Breeders Stakes’) aboard Wando, and 8 Sovereign Award Winner as Canada’s Outstanding Jockey.
Patrick Husbands Day is not just a commemoration of a sports icon but a festive gathering that honors cultural heritage and the spirit of excellence.
As Woodbine Racetrack prepares to host this event, the Caribbean community and fans of horse racing alike are invited to join in the festivities.
