Last Sunday, the who’s who of the Pan community gathered at the Downsview Park of headquarters of Pan Fantasy Steelband to celebrate World Steelpan Day. The Day was declared by the United Nations to raise awareness of the cultural and historical significance of the Steelpan, the National Musical Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), and its link to sustainable development. The day will be observed every year on August 11th
The event was held under the auspices of the Consulate of Trinidad and Tobago in Toronto, which was represented by Tracey Ramsubagh-Mannette, Consul General.
The host, Pan Fantasy, led a number of the top bands in the city – Afropan, New Dimension, Silhouettes, and Panatics. The highlight of the evening was the Trinidad & Tobago-based FC Supernova steel orchestra.
The event went well into the night as the thousand-odd attendees, who came to celebrate Trinidad & Tobago’s musical gift to the Caribbean and the rest of the world, couldn’t get enough of the wonderful accompanied by classic Caribbean food and drink.
