Young Canadians face significant mental health challenges, driven by social media pressures, economic uncertainties, global conflict, and climate change. Recognizing the urgency, the Honourable Ya’ara Saks, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, launched the Youth Mental Health Fund’s first call for proposals to improve access to community-based mental health care for youth across Canada.

This initiative, supported by a $500 million investment over five years from Budget 2024, aims to enhance mental health services tailored to the unique needs of youth, particularly underserved populations and Indigenous communities. Organizations can apply for funding to expand services, address gaps, and integrate programs into provincial, territorial, or Integrated Youth Service networks. The deadline for proposals is January 22, 2025.
“We need to meet youth where they are with the support they need,” said Minister Saks. “Community health organizations are essential in ensuring accessible treatment and resources, empowering young people to reach their full potential.”

Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services, emphasized the importance of culturally relevant care, stating, “This funding will improve the availability, accessibility, and effectiveness of mental wellness services for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth nationwide.”
The fund prioritizes Indigenous-specific, distinctions-based mental wellness programs to address disparities. Suicide remains a leading cause of death for youth aged 15-34, with Indigenous youth facing rates five to six times higher than non-Indigenous populations. Almost two-thirds of mental health disorders emerge before age 25, highlighting the critical need for early intervention.
This funding underscores the government’s commitment to fostering youth mental health and ensuring community organizations have the tools to help young Canadians succeed and thrive.
