Singer Ranking Roger dies at 56

Roger Charlery, known as Ranking Roger, a singer with ska-pop band,The English Beat,  died at his home in the United Kingdom on  Tuesday. He was 56.

As part of The Beat, Charlery spearheaded the two-tone movement with a distinctive vocal style influenced by the Jamaican rap technique of toasting.

The Birmingham-born vocalist had suffered a stroke last summer and was reported to have been diagnosed with two brain tumours and lung cancer in recent months.

Despite his health issues, Charlerly kept up a busy pace in recent times. An album released in January, Public Confidential by The Beat featuring Ranking Roger, included contributions from his daughter and son.
