A fire at Danforth Food Market’s North York location has temporarily closed an important shopping destination for Toronto’s Caribbean community.

The fire, which occurred in early September at the store at 3701 Keele Street, near Finch Avenue West, caused significant damage to the building. The property has since been fenced off as work continues.

In a notice to customers, Danforth Food Market thanked the community for its continued support and confirmed that the Keele Street location is being rebuilt.

“We are temporarily closed as we rebuild,” the company said, adding that it is preparing a temporary store in the rear parking lot and hopes to welcome customers back as soon as possible.

Anna, an employee at Danforth Food Market’s Silverstone location, told The Caribbean Camera that she could not provide a reopening date for the Keele store, noting that she understood the outlet had suffered significant damage.

The temporary closure removes, at least for now, a familiar source of Caribbean groceries and specialty foods for residents of northwest Toronto.

Customers are being encouraged to watch for updates from the company as work progresses on the temporary store and eventual reopening.
