Former Prime Minister of Grenada, Keith Mitchell, this week chose the World’s
Leading Honeymoon Destination, Saint Lucia, to celebrate his nuptials. Mitchell,
79 years old, married Trinidad and Tobago native and policy consultant Dr Ophelia
Wells, the second marriage for both.

Member of Parliament for St George North West, Mitchell had been married to
Marietta Mitchell for approximately four decades. Dr Wells, a 41-year-old
economist, was previously wed to Dennis Cornwall. Cornwall is now Minister of
Finance in the Cabinet of Dickon Mitchell, no relation to Keith.
Reports from Grenada suggest that the former prime minister, the longest-serving
in Grenadian history, tied the knot during a small private ceremony at or near
Pigeon Island in Gros Islet. The couple celebrated the occasion with Grenadian
guests on December 27.
Mitchell led the New National Party from 1989 until 2024, when he turned the
reins over to career educator Emmalin Pierre. He led the NNP to victory at the
1995 elections and remained as prime minister for 13 years. In 2013 and 2018, the
NNP won all 15 seats in the House of Assembly, but Mitchell was defeated by his
namesake, Dickon, in June 2022.
As recently as 2019, Wells was permanent secretary in Grenada’s Ministry of
Finance, Planning, Economic Development, and Physical Development. Her now
husband was at the time the Minister of Finance.
