The Jane and Finch community has a new place for young athletes to shine, thanks to a joint initiative by George Brown College (GBC), the Toronto Raptors, and Giants of Africa. These partners gathered on October 22 to inaugurate two brand-new basketball courts at Firgrove Park in north Toronto, marking an important step in bringing fresh recreational opportunities and community pride to the neighborhood.

Among those present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony were George Brown College President Dr. Gervan Fearon, Raptors President and Giants of Africa Co-Founder Masai Ujiri, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, and Councillor Anthony Perruzza (Humber River-Black Creek). The facility, which boasts a full-size FIBA court and two modified high school courts, will serve as a vibrant hub for local youth, who now have an inspiring place to gather, compete, and hone their skills.

“Through sports, we can unlock new learning opportunities and nurture the immense talent of our youth in the Jane and Finch community, aligning with our college’s commitment to accessible education and community development,” said Dr. Fearon, highlighting how the new courts merge athletic and academic paths. Over the past three years, more than 1,000 students from Jane and Finch have attended George Brown, and the facility exemplifies the college’s dedication to giving back to communities that nurture its students.

The project is part of Giants of Africa’s broader mission, which focuses on empowering young people through sport. While the organization has previously launched facilities across Africa, this Toronto site marks its second Canadian endeavor. For Ujiri and his team, the basketball court represents more than just a place to play – it is an emblem of community, inspiration, and growth. Each court features striking green and yellow tones, reinforcing the positive spirit Giants of Africa strives to foster in every community it reaches.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Chow underscored the broader impact the facility will have beyond athletics. “We are thrilled to open the basketball courts at Firgrove Park, creating a safe and vibrant space for our youth to play, learn and grow,” she said. “This is not just about basketball; it’s about building a community where dreams can take flight.”

Through the GBC-Raptors-Giants of Africa partnership and support from the City of Toronto, the Jane and Finch community now has an inviting, high-quality space where young people can experience the benefits of both sport and education. With these courts, organizers hope to inspire future leaders, on and off the court.
