Newly elected Premier of Montserrat, Reuben Meade, is set to return to work on Monday after being discharged from the hospital on Saturday, as announced by his family.

The 70-year-old politician, who recently came out of retirement to lead the United Alliance (UA) to victory in the October 24 general election, was hospitalized following an incident at the swearing-in ceremony for the new government on Friday evening.

His son, Ben Meade, a media and public relations professional, shared details in a statement: “Out of an abundance of caution, my father was taken to Glendon Hospital for evaluation after the ceremony. He was kept overnight for observation but has since been released and is feeling well, back to his usual jovial self.”

Ben expressed gratitude on behalf of the family to the medical staff who provided care and to those who offered assistance at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. He also thanked everyone who reached out with well wishes.

He emphasized that his father, who previously served as the island’s first premier from 2010 to 2014 and as chief minister on two occasions between 1991 and 2010, will be ready to tackle the challenges ahead after a relaxing weekend.

“My father will address the public at a suitable time. While we appreciate the concern regarding his health, we kindly ask for our family’s privacy this weekend,” the statement concluded.
