New Scarborough Playground Builds Hope and Inclusion

In a striking demonstration of community spirit and collaboration, a new playground is taking shape in Scarborough’s East end. On September 27, a coalition of local organizations, volunteers, and national partners will transform a patch of land at 62 Orchard Park Drive into a safe and welcoming play space for area children and families.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Foresters Financial and national nonprofit KABOOM!, working closely with BGC East Scarborough and the MAAT Youth Innovation & Cultural Centre. Together, they aim to offer more than just a playground. The project is a statement of equity and inclusion, ensuring that children in underserved and racialized communities have access to the developmental benefits of free, active play.

“This is more than a playground,” said Matt Berman, President and CEO of Foresters Financial. “It’s a place where children can dream, where families connect, and where neighbours come together. We are proud to support this effort alongside KABOOM! and BGC East Scarborough to bring lasting joy and opportunity to the community.”

KABOOM! has been working since 1996 to close the gap in play equity, particularly in communities of color, where safe and engaging play spaces are often out of reach. The organization has transformed more than 17,000 playspaces across North America, positively impacting over 12 million children. This latest build continues that mission, reflecting a broader commitment to inclusive development.

Although the primary construction will be completed in a single day, plans extend beyond the initial build. A fence will be added shortly after the playground is finished, protecting children from the nearby traffic and further enhancing the site’s safety.

The playground’s location is also significant. Just steps away, the Yemoja Village initiative is underway, transforming the former West Hill United Church site into 47 new affordable housing units for racialized youth. Together, these projects are helping to build not only physical infrastructure, but also community resilience and a sense of hope.

“Play is a fundamental part of healthy childhood development,” said Utcha Sawyers, CEO of BGC East Scarborough and the MAAT Youth Innovation & Cultural Centre. “This playground is more than just a place to climb and slide — it’s a place where our young people can connect, create, and thrive. We are deeply grateful for our partners in making this vision a reality.”

For over a century and a half, Foresters Financial has worked to support families, both financially and socially. While best known for its insurance and savings products in Canada, the US, and the UK, the organization also invests in grassroots initiatives that build stronger, healthier communities. Through scholarships, grants, and local partnerships, Foresters continues to prioritize purpose alongside profit.

Similarly, BGC East Scarborough has spent over 60 years empowering families through access to opportunity and support services. Its MAAT Centre focuses on creativity, innovation, and identity for BIPOC youth, offering safe spaces where potential is nurtured.

This new playground stands as a reminder of what becomes possible when organizations and communities invest together in the next generation — and ensure that every child, regardless of background, has a place to play, grow, and be safe.
